NVR vs DVR — what's the actual difference?
They process signals differently. A DVR ingests raw analog footage from coaxial cameras and encodes it inside the recorder. An NVR receives video that's already been encoded by IP cameras over Ethernet. In practice: DVR requires separate runs of coaxial cable plus power cable; PoE NVR uses a single Cat5e/6 cable for both data and power — fewer cables, simpler install.
We have a blog to explain it more clear, pease access from : NVR vs DVR — Technical Deep Dive for Professional Security – 4COVR
How many cameras can a single NVR handle?
Matched to its channel count. 4COVR offers 4CH, 8CH, 16CH, 32CH, and 64CH models. When choosing, always pad your count — add 2–4 channels above your current camera count to leave room for expansion.

Are firmware updates free?
Every firmware update is free. On first boot, install the latest version to unlock full remote viewing and the latest fixes. Updates push through the LAN or can be downloaded from the 4COVR support page by model number.
What actually determines resolution — is "2K" the whole story?
Not quite. Resolution comes down to the image sensor's pixel count. A 2K label covers 3MP, 4MP, and 5MP sensors — and the difference between 3MP and 5MP is substantial in real footage. Same for "4K": some are true 8MP sensors, others cut corners. Always check the actual megapixel rating.
we have a relative article to make the resolution more straightaway. 4K vs 1080P — Do You Really Need 4K for Home Security ? – 4COVR
How does 4COVR's PoE system get installed?
The simplest option: one Cat5e cable per camera carries both power and data to the NVR. Cameras auto-detect on the NVR's PoE ports — no configuration, no separate power adapters at each camera. Max cable run: 300ft / 90m per run.

How to Install Home Security Cameras — DIY Installation Guide – 4COVR
How do cameras actually see in the dark?
Most use infrared LEDs. IR light is invisible to the human eye but visible to the camera sensor — it reflects off objects and back to the lens, producing a black-and-white night vision image. Higher-end models push IR illumination further; some Bullet cameras exceed 100m range. and 4COVR's new linup is coming, it will offer unbelievablenight vision based on latest technology. (AI-isp)
Color Night Vision — how is it different from IR?
Color Night Vision relies on ambient light — street lamps, porch lights, nearby building glow — to produce full-color footage after dark. It doesn't use IR. If ambient light drops below roughly 1 lux, the camera switches to standard IR (black-and-white). 4COVR's BinSight Dual Light series can toggle between Spotlight mode (active deterrent) and Color Night Vision mode (passive evidence) — two distinct functions in one unit
How does motion detection actually trigger?
The system watches for pixel changes across the frame. When movement exceeds the threshold, you can configure: clip recording saved separately, push notification to your phone, and/or email alert. AI NVR models add human/vehicle classification — filtering out wind-blown leaves, pets, and shadows to reduce false alerts.
How does NVR works?
The NVR runs five functions simultaneously without interrupting any of the others: live recording, live preview, playback, USB backup export, and remote app access.
What exactly is a PTZ camera?
PTZ stands for Pan-Tilt-Zoom — a motorised camera that can sweep 355° horizontally, tilt 90° vertically, and zoom optically on distant subjects. Useful for open areas like warehouses and parking lots where you want automated patrol scanning plus the ability to zero in on a specific spot. 4COVR's PanoTrak series adds Auto Tracking, locking onto and following moving targets automatically.
How long before footage gets overwritten?
Three variables: hard drive capacity, camera count and resolution, and recording mode. Default HDD configs — 8CH: bare unit or 2TB; 16CH: 4TB; 32CH: 8TB; 64CH: 2×8TB. Switching from 24/7 continuous to event-triggered recording cuts storage use by roughly 60% under H.265.
Is footage compressed before storage?
All footage is compressed automatically — H.264 or H.265 (HEVC). H.265 delivers roughly 40–50% better compression than H.264 at the same visual quality, meaning longer retention on the same drive.
How Long Do Security Cameras Keep Footage? (2026 Guide) – 4COVR
What is H.265 / HEVC — in plain terms?
H.264 compression compares two frames and only stores what changed between them (inter-frame). H.265 goes further: it also finds similarities within a single frame (intra-frame) and uses more sophisticated prediction algorithms. Result: the same footage at the same quality takes 40–50% less space. A 4TB drive under H.265 effectively stores what a 6TB+ drive would under H.264.
How do I export a video clip?
Insert a USB drive into the NVR's USB port. Navigate to Backup, select channel and time range, and export. Output format defaults to MP4 — opens in any player, no proprietary software needed.
What file formats does the NVR export?
Two options: MP4 (preferred — universal format, works everywhere)
Can I tweak the recording settings per camera?
Each channel can be configured independently: resolution, framerate, recording mode (continuous / motion-triggered / scheduled), motion detection zones (draw areas of interest directly on the video feed), and bitrate control.
Guard App & Software
What apps does 4COVR use?
GuardViewer for smartphones (iOS and Android) — live view, playback, push alerts. GuardStation for Windows and macOS — multi-NVR management on desktop.
You can access the "software” page to get more informaiton.
How do I pair the app with the NVR?
Download GuardViewer, scan the QR code on the NVR body, and follow the in-app wizard. No manual port forwarding required on most network setups.
You can download the guide from Documentation Lib – 4COVR.
