How to Retrieve NVR Footage — Why Local Storage Means Faster Retrieval

Cloud storage and local NVR storage are not equivalent at retrieval time. Cloud systems require login, server handshake, buffer loading, and history navigation before a single frame plays. Local NVR systems connect directly to the device and play footage in seconds. Searching Footage — Timeline, AI Filter, and Multi-Camera

The fastest path from "I need footage" to "I have the clip" is the search function. Most users skip this and scroll the timeline manually — which is why retrieval takes 40 minutes instead of 30 seconds.

Calendar view: the playback page shows a calendar with color marks on dates that have footage. Open the calendar, click the date of the incident, and the page jumps to that day.

Timeline drag: the playback timeline shows a 24-hour bar with colored segments. Green = continuous recording, blue = motion or event-triggered recording. Drag the timeline cursor to the approximate time, then use the frame-by-frame buttons to pinpoint the moment.

AI Detection filter: this is the most underused search tool. Open the AI filter, select Person or Vehicle, and the timeline shows only the segments where the camera detected a person or vehicle. Everything else is hidden. This turns a 24-hour timeline into a handful of segments, each one a candidate for the footage you actually need.

Playback and Export — Save Clips to USB

Found the footage. Now save it. Two operations: playback speed control for browsing, and clip export for evidence preservation.

Playback speed: 1x for normal viewing, 2x or 4x for skipping through quiet segments, 8x for extreme scan. The 4x setting is usually the right speed for finding the start of an event. Once you see the action, drop back to 1x or use frame-by-frame to capture the moment.

Clip export to USB: this is how you save the footage for the police, insurance, or your own records.

1. In the playback view, click on the timeline at the start of the segment you want to export.
2. Click Clip or Export.
3. Set the end point on the timeline.
4. Insert a USB drive (FAT32 for under 32GB, exFAT for 64GB and larger — both formats are supported by 4COVR NVRs).
5. Click Save and wait for the export to complete.

For longer segments or full-day evidence, export the full recording rather than a clip. Full recording export takes longer but preserves the entire timeline for context.

USB format matters: FAT32 supports drives up to 32GB but limits individual files to 4GB. exFAT supports drives 64GB and larger with no file size limit. Common Issues When Footage Is Missing

Footage is missing for one of five reasons. Check in this order — most issues are resolved by the third check.

Reason 1: HDD not formatted. A new NVR or a replacement HDD starts empty and unformatted. The NVR will show "No HDD" or "HDD Error" in the storage settings page. Format the HDD from the NVR's main menu (Storage → HDD Management → Format). Formatting takes 30-90 minutes for a 4TB drive. Do not interrupt the format.

Reason 2: Recording schedule disabled. The NVR ships with continuous 24/7 recording enabled by default. If the schedule was changed to "Motion Only" or a custom schedule with gaps, the gaps produce no footage. Open Recording Schedule in the NVR menu and verify continuous or motion-triggered recording covers all hours.

Reason 3: Motion detection not enabled. If recording is set to motion-only and motion detection is disabled, the NVR records nothing. Open each camera's settings and verify both Motion Detection and AI Detection are enabled. AI Detection alone is not enough if recording is set to motion-only.

Reason 4: HDD full with loop-overwrite off. When the HDD fills up, the NVR stops recording unless loop-overwrite is on. Open Storage settings and verify "Overwrite" is enabled. With overwrite on, the oldest footage is recycled as new footage is recorded. With overwrite off, the NVR stops recording the moment the HDD is full.

Reason 5: Recording delayed by 2-3 seconds. AI detection takes 2-3 seconds to process the trigger and start recording.
